Merch Store is Live

CHS Boys Soccer gear is now available to order at our merch store! Open until September 8, the merch store is a great way give back to the program while you to rep the team, and make sure our boys feel the support every step of the way.

All orders will be shipped to our Booster Club team member, Anju Rajashekar. We are doing this to save all families from paying a shipping fee. Once merchandise arrives, details will be provided on distribution to families.

Tryout Schedule Updates

All of the following information is subject to change. Student-athletes should follow any changes communicated to them by coaches/captains.

Upperclassmen (10-12th) Schedule
Location: Underhill
Monday 8/17: 6:30am-8am; 5-7pm
Tuesday 8/18: 1-4pm
Wednesday 8/19: 6:30am-8am; 3-5pm
Thursday 8/20: 10:30am-12pm
Friday 8/21: 10:30am-12pm

Freshmen Schedule
Location: Ritzer Field (directly behind CHS)
Monday 8/17: 12-2pm
Tuesday 8/18: 12-2pm

Please note: Freshmen tryouts are scheduled to accommodate Freshmen Orientation. The schedule for the remainder of the week will be communicated by coaches; expect tryouts to continue through Friday 8/21

New Head Coach Meeting

The CHS Director of Athletics, Sjocquelyn Winstead, is holding a meeting Wednesday, August 12, at 6pm in the CHS Cafe to welcome CHS Boys Soccer’s new Head Coach. Student-athletes and parents are encouraged to attend.

Coach will share the vision for the program, team expectations, season goals, as well as tryout and practice schedules.

Update on Freshman Tryouts

Coach Muirhead has confirmed that freshman tryouts on Monday 8/17 and Tuesday 8/18 will be held from 12pm – 2pm on Ritzer Field (the field right next to the High School). Freshmen can attend orientation in the morning and then head over to the field for tryouts.

Fall Sports Registration Reminder

The following was sent from the Principal Sanchez and  AD Winstead on July 22. All registration questions should be directed to AD Winstead (her email address is in the text below):

This is a quick reminder that time is running out to register for the upcoming Fall sports season – there are less than 10 days! The deadline to register is July 30, 2026

Please note that there will be no registration extensions under any circumstances.

Required Documentation…

To participate on a school-sponsored interscholastic team, student-athletes must submit the following forms:

  1. Preparticipation Physical Evaluation Medical Eligibility Form (valid for 365 days) AND/OR  2. NJDOE Health History Update Questionnaire

How to Submit Your Forms (Two-Step Process):

  • Step 1: Upload the forms electronically through the Final Forms registration portal.
  • Step 2: Drop off a printed hard copy of your forms at Columbia High School (in the mailbox outside of the Athletic Director’s Office) Monday – Friday from 8:30AM – 4:00PM. (Note: The printed hard copy is a strict requirement set by the NJSIAA). 

Need a Physical? We Have Options!

If your student-athlete is currently unable to get an appointment with their regular doctor for a physical, we have great news! See the options below: 

1. In collaboration with the NJSIAA, the AFC Urgent Care is the Official Partner of the NJSIAA, and there is a statewide initiative called Cleared for Play Weekend. On Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2, every AFC Urgent Care location across New Jersey will be open to help student-athletes prepare for the upcoming fall sports season. 

  • Date: Saturday, August 1, 2026 and  Sunday, August 1, 2026
    • AFC Urgent Care services include:
      • Sport & School Physicals
      • Urgent Care
      • Primary Care
      • Lab Testing
      • X-Rays

2. In collaboration with the Essex County Office of Public Health, we are bringing The Pediatric Health Van to Underhill on August 6, 2026, to provide physicals. 

REMINDER — Do not wait until the last minute—get your forms uploaded, physicals scheduled, and hard copies dropped off as soon as possible so your student-athlete is cleared and ready for try-outs!

Tryout Information

Schedule:
Tryouts begin Monday, August 17.  Times and locations are not yet finalized.  We will send an update once the schedule is confirmed.

  • Freshmen will attend a 2 hour session on Monday 8/17, Tuesday 8/18, and Wednesday 8/19.
  • Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors will have double sessions on Monday 8/17, and Wednesday 8/19, and a single session on Tuesday 8/18.  
  • A 2 mile timed run will be held one of the mornings.

Important Ways to Prepare
  • Strength training. This is important and often a huge differentiator.
  • Run a lot. Varsity players should be targeting a 2 mile time of 12-13 minutes.
  • Play. Play as much as you can. Play with older kids. Play with better kids.
Tryout Evaluation Elements of Focus
  • The ability to dribble in tight spaces and at speed with BOTH feet
  • The ability to shoot with accuracy inside the 18 with BOTH feet
  • The ability to shoot with power outside the 18 with BOTH feet
  • The ability to play a 10-15 yard pass accurately with BOTH feet
  • The ability to play a cross from the wing, with BOTH feet
  • Dribbling skills
  • First touch and control in general
  • Movement without the ball
  • Maturity
  • Speed, endurance, strength
  • Being a good teammate 
Ongoing Summer Opportunities (Summer Camp, etc)

These are entirely optional but also a great way for players and coaches to get to know each other and prepare for the fall.  

  • Friday night 11v11 sessions held by the coaching staff (currently scheduled for 6-8pm at Underhill but subject to change).
  • Pickup sessions organized by the seniors (if your child is not on the GroupMe, please let us know so we can pass along their contact information to the upperclassmen running the GroupMe).
  • Coaches’ Preseason Camp 8/10-8/13.  Details and registration hereThis opportunity is available to all players, and attendance at camp does not impact a player’s chance to make the team.  If cost is a concern, please reach out to any of the Boosters or to Coach Muirhead.  
  • The coaches no-contact period this summer is 7/25-8/2.

Pre-Season Dates & Registrations

Below you’ll find important information and registration details for optional summer programming available to all players planning to try out for a team in the fall. 

Mark your calendars for tryouts which begin 8/17/2026

MONTCLAIR SUMMER LEAGUE – The 8v8 Montclair Summer League runs for 6 weeks at Montclair State University and is open to players in grades 10-12 for 2026-27.  You do not have to be present for all games to participate; each player will select a maximum of 3 games to attend.  Specific details regarding games and schedule will follow for registered players.  Please note the breakdown below:

• Upperclassmen & Returning Varsity PlayersMonday evenings, 6/8 – 7/13
• UnderclassmenTuesday evenings, 6/9 – 7/14

Tentative Summer ’26 Dates

We know many families are making summer plans, so wanted to share some very TENTATIVE dates from Coach Muirhead:

  • Summer League at Montclair State: Mondays/Tuesday nights starting June 15
  • West Essex Day One Tournament: Saturday, June 27, participating grades TBD
  • Blackout Period: 7/25-8/2 (potentially–not confirmed)
  • Camp: Week of 8/10
  • Tryouts begin: Week of 8/17

End of Season Celebration!

Players and two family members are invited to celebrate the end of the season on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at The Woodland, 60 Woodland Avenue in Maplewood from 6:30-9:30 pm.

Senior Night!

We hope you’ll join us to celebrate our senior players this Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at Underhill Field. The ceremony begins at 5:30pm followed by a 6:30 game.
